For some time now A-Line Taxis, Dorchester’s oldest taxi company, have been supporting Positive Steps with regular monthly donations.
These donations now completely cover the cost of transporting the Positive Steps patients from Nkhoma Mission Hospital (sometimes twice a month) to the prosthetic and orthotic centre run by one of our partner charities, ‘500 Miles’, based at Kamuzu Central Hospital, in Lilongwe (37 miles away). This transport allows patients who require new prosthetic limbs, but who have no other form of transport to get there and receive their treatment (see post 25th March 2015). The donations cover all associated costs, such as fuel, driver, nurse attendants and food for up to 10 patients and their carers.
It is fantastic that a ‘transport’ company based in the UK is financing the transport of patients in Malawi; making a real difference to their lives. Without this regular guaranteed income, Positive Steps would not be able to provide this important link with 500 miles and many of these patients could not be provided with new or replacement prosthetic limbs …
