Positive Steps funds an ambulance monthly from Nkhoma Hospital to city-based clinics, such as with the ‘500 miles’ charity based at Kamuzu Central Hospital, in Lilongwe (37 miles away). This allows patients who require prosthetic limbs, but who have no other form of transport, to get there and receive their treatment. This service costs £32/month, which covers fuel, driver, nurse attendants and food for up to 10 patients. The photos below show one of the Nkhoma Hospital ambulances …

Linked to this … Positive Steps also pays for ‘bundles of care’ for amputee patients at Nkhoma Hospital. Often burns lead to severe infection and amputation. Each ‘bundle of care’ costs £60 per patient … This includes the hospital stay, surgery, postoperative care and medications. We rely on the NHS!

Amazing that a standing order for £5/month would pay for one patient’s care each year.

Below … Funsirani Kaziputa, one of the patients who could benefit from our ‘bundle of care’ and was referred to ‘500 Miles’ by positive Steps.  Funsirani had a below knee amputation due to tumour … He proudly shows his new prothetic leg provided by the charity ‘500 miles’ …
